මෙම මෙහෙයුම ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන ආකාරය පිළිබඳව මුල් වටයේ සාකච්ඡාවක්‌ ලබන සඳුදා ආරම්භ කරන අතර මේ සඳහා හමුදා නිලධාරීන්, වනජීවී නිලධාරීන්, ආපදා කළමනාකරණ අමාත්‍යාංශයේ නිලධාරීන්, මැති ඇමැතිවරුන්, ප්‍රාදේශීය සභා මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් හා පළාත් සභා මන්ත්‍රීවරුන්ගේ සහභාගිත්වය බලාපොරොත්තු වන බවද ඇය පැවසුවාය.

නිල්වලා ගඟේ සිටින කිඹුලන් සංඛ්‍යාව කොපමණදැයි ගණනය කළ නොහැකි අතර කිඹුලියක වරකට බිත්තර සියයක්‌ පමණ දමන බවද ඇය කීවාය.

මෙම මෙහෙයුම ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන නිල්වලා ගඟෙන් කිඹුලන් ඉවත් කරන තෙක්‌ ගඟට බැසීමෙන් වළකින ලෙසද දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌ ලේකම්වරිය මාතර සහ ඒ අවට ජනතාවගෙන් විශේෂ ඉල්ලීමක්‌ කර ඇත.

Operation Crocs in Nilwala

An operation would be launched to capture the killer crocodiles in the Nilwala Ganga in the South, Matara District Secretary Ms. W. K. K. Atukorala disclosed yesterday.

Three persons have been killed in crocodile attacks so far this year.

To map out the capturing operation a high-level meeting has been summoned next Monday at the District Secretariat. Among those invited are affected area MPs, relevant Ministers, officers of the Navy, Wild Life, and Disaster Management, and relevant Pradeshiya Sabha and the Provincial Council members.

Ms Atukorala said it was difficult to give the exact number of crocodiles living in the river, but their birth rate was rather high with a single female laying about hundred eggs at a time.

She appealed to the public to refrain from getting into the river for bathing and other purposes till the operation to capture the beasts was completed.

They were also in the process of installing about 60 crocodile-proof steel cages along the river for people to bathe in, she said.

The captured crocs are expected to be sent to the Dehiwala zoo and those in excess are likely to be released into wild life parks.

The latest victim of a croc attack was a 16-year-old schoolgirl from Malimbada North who was dragged away on Wednesday morning. About a week earlier a mother of two was snatched away also in Malimbada as she was washing clothes after bathing her two sons. The two sons raised cries from the river bank when they saw their mother being dragged away, but no one dared to step into the river to help her out of fear. Earlier a man was killed by a crocodile in the Akuressa area.
