Following raids conducted on errant bakeries and eateries in the Ganemulla town, the Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) detected food not fit for consumption served in them. Bellana PHI K.M.S.Bandara said that the errant bakery owners and eatery owners will be prosecuted on April 17.

An officer said that in some eateries and restaurants curries which were prepared three days ago were heated and served to customers.

In some cases dairy products and milk powder were stored in refrigerators along with raw meat and fish.

Such items detected were doused with kerosene and set on fire with the consent of its owners, one of the health officials said.

In all these places the effluents were directed to the road and after washing the dishes and plates the refuse water was directed to the public drains and the stagnant water had provided an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, he said.

Although the standard of hygiene of waiters was satisfactory, the state of kitchen staff was much to be desired as they were shabbily dressed and the sweat pouring down their foreheads and body was dropping into the dishes that they were preparing, the officer said.

"It is no different in the bakeries and the trays with bread taken out from the ovens were kept on the ground gathering dust, though they were later displayed in glass cabinets for sale," he said.

The PHI said that each of the 10 bakers and eatery owners have been ordered to rectify the shortcomings and show them to the PHIs within seven days.
