Arrangements are being made to ready Nuwara Eliya town for the Spring Festival which attracts thousands of fun seekers and holiday crowds fleeing the April heat of Colombo.
Various organizations and the Nuwara Eliya municipal council are preparing the city for the month of festivity.
The season will officially commence tomorrow (8) and will continue up to April 25.
Marking the launch of the season a band display and a parade by 1000 schoolchildren was held at the city on April 1.
The Sri Lanka Turf Club plans to host races of local and international horses, club sources said adding that the first race for the Mayor’s cup would be held today. Two other major cup races the Governor’s Cup race and the Sunquick Cup race will be held on April 15 and 22 respectively.
DIG Nuwara Eliya Ananda Wijesuriya said that an additional police force of 800 men in both uniforms and civvies had been detailed on round-the-clock special duties in view of this year’s spring festival which brings in thousands of entertainment seekers, holiday crowds and traders seeking to meet the demand.
Chairman of the Sri Lankan Airlines Nishantha Wickremasinghe said that a fleet of sea planes would be added to serve the fun seekers.
Games and activities as boat races, motor cycle races, beauty pageants, agricultural exhibitions, dog shows and floral exhibitions have been added to the list of festivities.
