Pandemonium reigned in the coastal areas yesterday afternoon following a tsunami alert in the wake of the US Geological Survey reporting a 8.6 magnitude quake centred 20 miles (33 km) beneath the ocean floor, around 269 miles (434 km) from Aceh’s provincial capital.

Director General of Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Dr. N. P. Wijayananada told The Island that the first earthquake had not caused any damage, though there was a slight change in the sea level.

There had been three aftershocks of 8.2, 6.0 and 5.2 on the Richter scale. "We are still on alert," he said.

A tsunami watch was issued for countries across the Indian Ocean after the massive earthquake hit Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday.

The tremor was felt in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia and India.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.

Fearing massive waves hitting naval bases on the East, North and South coasts, SLN headquarters ordered all vessels out to the sea as a precautionary measure. Navy officials told The Island that every possible action was being taken to protect assets, particularly those deployed in the Eastern theatre as the East was expected to be hit first.

Warning that the tsunami could strike the Northern, Eastern and Western Provinces, the Meteorological Department earlier asked those living in coastal areas to move to safe places. The department warned that there was the possibility of a tsunami striking Trincomalee at 4.10 pm, Colombo at 4.50 pm and Jaffna at 6.00 pm.

Sri Lanka Railways yesterday temporarily suspended all trains on the coastal belt and also the Puttalam line, while the southern coastal road was closed for traffic for several hours.

Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera urged people not to panic, but to move to safer areas.

The government ordered the armed forces to move in to ensure that unscrupulous elements wouldn’t take advantage of the situation.

The government also announced that people could use the Southern highway free of charge in view of the emergency. A senior spokesman said that vehicles except three wheelers and motor cycles could use the highway.

The government lifted the tsunami warning at 6. 30 p.m. A spokesman for the Information Department said that people could now return to their homes.
