“The ‘shelter for all through Divi Neguma (Isurubara Diviyakata Samata Nivasak) programme will provide clay roofing tiles to 30,630 households with makeshift roofs in the Anuradhapura district.

“The programme will be implemented parallel to the Deyata Kirula National Exhibition,” director of Divi Neguma, Economic Development Ministry, Jayathilaka Herath said.

The Cabinet has approved the allocation of Rs 800 million to provide 27 million tiles through the programme from the 2012 budgetary allocation for the Deyata Kirula exhibition.

A survey has been done to select the houses with tin and cadjan roofs.

The selected houses will receive up to 1,000 clay roofing tiles according to the size of the house.

Horowpothana Divisional Secretariat has the highest number of beneficiaries of 2,468 followed by Nochchiya gama with 2,449 houses.

On average, over 1,000 households in each of the 22 divisional secretariat divisions will benefit under this scheme.

Herath said that one of the primary aims of the programme was to encourage local industries.

The members of the All Island Clay Roof Tile Manufacturers Association and the factories owned by the State Resources and Enterprise Development Ministry would also benefit from the programme.

It’s hoped that by providing a permanent roof over their heads, the people of households will be encouraged to join and contribute to the national economy.

Director Herath said that there is an awakening in the district already due to the programme. He requested the full co-orporation of the public and all government officials to ensure the successful completion of the programme.
