Solar and wind Energy would be utilised to suffice the energy requirements of the country by 2017 making those the cheapest by then, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
“Though at present those are expensive, after laying a considerable capital to gain the technology necessary to utilize these sources, we will be able to make renewable energy cheaper than present day coal,” he told the media at the launch of Sri Lanka Energies (Pvt) Ltd at BMICH last week.
The Minister Ranawaka noted in future most of the countries would impose carbon tax and it will soon be a necessity for the companies to be aware of the situation. “Importers should begin to manufacture goods with less carbon, as there is a possibility that carbon taxes will be imposed on our goods and this would be an extra expense for the nation,” he said.
Minister further said CEB has plans to increase the renewable energy sources up to 20% in the national grid by 2020 and hoped to utilise the hot water springs available in different parts of Sri Lanka to produce energy soon.
Sri Lanka Energies (Pvt.) Ltd, a subsidiary of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), would act as a consultancy agency to many of the private companies while carrying out its own projects, its Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Energies S.E. Diddeniya said.
