Cold weather to peter out

Disna MUDALIGE

The cold weather persisting in the mornings in most parts of the island will slightly lessen during the next few days, Meteorology Department duty forecaster P.G. Yasaratne told the Daily News.

He said the main reason for the cold weather in the morning was the dry wind from the Northern direction across the Indian Ocean. He predicted that the wind direction will change to the Eastern and North Eastern directions in the next few days and as a result the moisture in the air would increase.

Yasaratne observed that ground frost being experienced in Nuwara Eliya in the morning will also gradually lessen in the next few days. He said Nuwara Eliya will experience ground frost today morning while misty conditions are also expected over the country particularly during the morning.

He said that dry weather would prevail over most parts of the island today except for a few showers in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

Nuwara Eliya experiences ground frost at dawn

by Dasun Edirisinghe

Nuwara Eliya experienced a rare ground frost at dawn yesterday as temperatures plummeted to 6.5 Celsius causing acute cold.

Tourists and locals in large numbers gathered at places like World’s End, Gregory Tank and the Golf Course yesterday morning to witness the rare occurrence, District Secretary T. P. G. Kumarasiri told The Island.

He said that there were reports that yesterday’s ground frost caused damage to vegetable and tea cultivations in the district.

The previous lowest recorded temperature from the district was Celsius minus 2.6 on January 14, 1929, he said.

Meteorologist in charge P. G. Yasaratne said the ground frost was caused by a dry wind from India, but from tomorrow, temperatures would increase to 9 and 10 Celsius as the wind moved away.

He said that the country was experiencing the North East Monsoon.

According to him there will be a few showers in the Northern, North -Central, Eastern and Uva provinces.

Thunder showers are also likely at a few places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the afternoon or evening, he said.

Yasaratne said that except for a few showers in the sea areas off the Northern and Eastern coasts, mainly fair weather will prevail over the sea areas around the island.

The sea areas around the island will not be rough, he said.
