A special programme to keep Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) clean during the pilgrimage season has been launched under Central Environmental Authority (CEA) coordination.

The programme is being conducted by the Post Consumer Plastic Waste Management National Project of the CEA with the coordination of the Explorers' Club of Peradeniya University, voluntary groups and Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha.

The Sri Pada pilgrimage season which started with the Full Moon of December extends until the Wesak Poya in May. The busiest period is expected from January to February.

The Sri Pada attracts thousands of devotees annually during the pilgrimage season.

CEA Post Consumer Plastic Waste management Project Director Bandula Sarath Kumara told the Daily News that a special compost plant would be opened in Nallathanni on January 15 to facilitate composting of garbage collected from the Sri Pada premises.

He said that special concern is given to keep this world heritage site clean throughout the pilgrimage season.

He also said that the polythene and plastic collected would be handed over to the recyclers after the conclusion of the pilgrimage season.

This project collected nearly one ton of plastic and polythene last year.
