Cabinet nod for National Water Trust

'Sri Lanka has the largest community based organization in the world which helps in providing purified water to the community', Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardana, said.

'Cabinet approval has been granted to establish the National Community Water Trust to give strength to the community based water supply project which will be implemented countrywide,' he said.

The inaugural ceremony to establish the National Community Water Trust was held at the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry under the patronage of Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardana recently.

'Through the community based water supply project the country has an important message to send to the world community.

'This is not a corporation, department or another institution. This is a Trust which indicates the strength of the community in Sri Lanka,' he said. "This Trust will carry out immense work in the future.

'As of now 3.4 million individuals are provided clean and purified water through 3,500 community based water supply projects throughout the country.

'The National Community Water Trust will help protect such water supply projects.

'Through the implementation of the National Community Water Trust rural people can enjoy many fundamental facilities such as health, education and sanitation.

"Due to this project many people would get the opportunity to utilize purified tube water countrywide. The national water supply project is also providing its assistance for the implementation of the community based water supply project," Minister Gunawardana said.

'The Government has offered it's cooperation for the community based water supply project. Economic Development Ministry also has provided assistance to convert many water supply projects which are empowered under the Gemi Diriya programme, he said.

As trustee of the National Community Water Trust, Secretary to the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry A Abegunasekera, Ministry of Finance Director Sanjaya Senanayake, Local Government and Provincial Council Ministry Senior Assistant Secretary W G Premalal, National Water Supply and Drainage Board chairman Karunasena Hettiarachchi, National Water Supply and Drainage Board General Manager Lal Premanath, Sri Lanka Water Partnership Institute President Kusum Athukorala, Community Based Water Supply Project Director Harsha Sooriyaarachchi, Forum of Sri Lanka Rain Water Reservoir chairman C Weerarathna, representing community based water projects, Chamila Priyadharshani, Sunil Rathnayake, and J S Upali also participated in the event.
