Ranawaka promises electricity for all in 2012

The Power and Energy Ministry would invest Rs. 34,182 million this year to improve the distribution and generation of electricity.

According to the Power and Energy Ministry, of the above sum Rs. 15,635 million would be allocated for 11 projects to conclude the ongoing 2,600 rural electrification schemes. The project objective was to cover areas yet not provide with electricity.

However, the Ceylon Electricity Board budget allocation for general systems, resources and research for 2012 was yet to be finalized, Ministry officials said

"Budget allocation is in the pipeline," an official said.

On Monday, Power and Energy Minister, Patali Champika Ranawaka pledged to make every effort to provide electricity to all within this year.

He said that 2012 was a challenging year for the Ministry and compared to the work done in the past year, he was confident that his Ministry would be capable of fulfilling duties and responsibilities for the betterment of the country.

He stressed that under no circumstance had his Ministry willfully delayed its duties.

"We were able to provide uninterrupted electricity round the clock and in consolidating this position all employees and the staff of the Ministry should dedicate themselves to provide electricity to the whole country before the end of this year," he told the CEB officials on Monday.
