Norachcholai resumes power generation after 25 days

The much discussed first coal fired power plant at Norachcholai, which had been out of operation for 25 days, resumed generating of electricity yesterday evening.

Ceylon Electricity Board Acting Chairman Anura Wijepala told The Island yesterday that plant would be running at peak production from today.

He said that the China Machinery and Engineering Corporation (CMEC), the company that built the plant and maintains it said that they would conduct an investigation on their own on its frequent breakdowns.

Frequent breakdowns at the country’s first coal fired power plant, at Norachcholai, forced the CEB to take up the matter strongly with its builder, CMEC earlier this months. Wijepala said that the Chinese Governmentm being a long time friend of Sri Lankam was keen on the rapid development of Sri Lanka. He said that like the CEB, they too were disturbed with the frequent breakdowns at the plant.

The Acting Chairman said it would cost the CEB an average of Rs. 80 million a day to meet the power shortfall, caused by the Norochcholai plant break downs, with costly thermal electricity.

The Norochcholai coal-fired power plant was built by China under a US$ 450 million credit line from China Export Import Bank.

The plant providing 300 megawatts to the national grid, commenced operations in March 2011.

Prior to the latest break down, the plant was out of service for a week and it resumed generation of electricity from the first week of January.
