In an effort to expand power supply to the Mannar and Vavuniya Districts in the Northern Province, the Power and Energy Ministry has decided to establish a 100 MW wind-powered electricity plant in Mannar.
The construction of the plant was to commence by the end of this year, Ministry Media Secretary Dhanushka Ramanayaka said.
He said feasibility studies were being conducted.
The Ministry had also taken steps to establish a 25 megawatt thermal power plant that is run on furnace oil in Jaffna, Ramanayaka said. In addition, the Ministry will set up solar power systems in selected places, he added.
Under the expansion project, a new Regional CEB Office will be established in the Mannar District.
