Environmental Chief yesterday claimed that a number of initiatives were in the pipeline to make Sri Lanka energy sufficient.
Promotion of renewable energy resources as opposed to fossil fuel based energy was the best solution for the increasing energy demand and as a climate change mitigation measure, said Central Environment Authority (CEA) Chairman, Charitha Herath.
He told The Island that potential for wind, biomass and solar energy development was significant here.
He said that promotion of renewable energy was the key as most countries were into it to cut down on waste and emissions.
CEA was promoting a number of initiatives especially mini hydro, solar and wind power. Energy efficiency was another area especially in new constructions, urban energy use and pumping of water, he said.
According to Environment Minister, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa it was a necessary to develop innovative investment plans to effectively develop potential renewable energy resources in the country.
Yapa believes that Rio+20, a conference with a focus on sustainable energy and clean environment, will provide opportunities for increased investment on renewable energy development and use efficiency improvements.
Herath said that institutional architecture too should be geared to support sustainable development through meeting the challenges in design and implementation of development programmes including support to low carbon growth.
