Steps would be taken to establish a Children’s Welfare Unit, for the underprivileged in Colombo to look into their problems and needs, in collaboration with the National Child Welfare and Protection Authority (NCWPA), Colombo Mayor A. J. M. Muzammil said yesterday.
The City Father told The Island that the groundwork to implement a special scheme to investigate and report on Children’s Homes and Day Care Centres in Colombo too would be initiated.
All three languages wolud be taught to the children in addition to his/her mother tongue which would be an advantage to them in the future and would be introduced from pre-schools in Colombo. If successful it could be introduced into the main education scheme. Community Centres would be utilized for additional educational activities and a library will be founded in each Community Centre, he said.
Muzammil also said that a Municipal Educational Commission would be appointed to look into and report on shortcomings and requirements of schools in Colombo and identify areas which need improvements and make necessary recommendations.
