උකුණන් මර්දනයට ලබාදෙන ලින්ඩේන් ආ‍ලේපය තහනම් කරයි

හිසෙහි උකුණන් මර්දනයට හා පණු හොරි සඳහා වසර තිහකට අධික කාලයක් මෙරට මෙන්ම ලොව පුරාත් භාවිත කළ ලින්ඩේන් නමැති බාහිර ආ‍ලේපන ඖෂධය භාවිතයෙන් ඉවත් කිරීමට සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යංශය තීරණය කර තිබේ. විලවුන් උපකරණ හා ඖෂධ නියාමන අධිකාරියේ අධ්‍යක්ෂ වෛද්‍ය හේමන්ත බෙනරගම මහතා විසින් මේ බව සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යංශයට දැනුම්දී ඇත.ලින්ඩේන් සියයට එකක අවම සාන්ද්‍රණයක් බාහිර ඖෂධයක් ලෙස භාවිතා කරන අතර, එහි අධි සාන්ද්‍රණය කෘෂිකාර්මික ක්‍ෂේත්‍රයේදී කෘමිනාශකයක් ලෙසද භාවිතා වන බැවින් දීර්ඝ කාලීනව මෙම රසායනය ශරීර ගතවීම භයානක සෞඛ්‍ය ප්‍රශ්න ඇතිකරන බව සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යංශය පවසයි.

පරිසරයට හා සෞඛ්‍යයට හානිකර රසායන පිළිබඳව ස්ටොක්හෝම් සම්මුති මණ්ඩලය ලින්ඩේන් 2009දී කෘෂිකාර්මික භාවිතයෙන් ඉවත් කළ අතර ඖෂධයක් ලෙස වර්ෂ 2015 දක්වා භාවිතා කිරීමට ඉඩදී ඇති නමුත් ලංකාවේ ඖෂධ පිළිබඳ තාක්ෂණ උපදේශන කමිටුව මේ සඳහා ආරක්ෂාකාරී ක්‍රියාකාරී ඖෂධ 3ක් මෙරට තුළ භාවිතයේ ඇති බව පෙන්වාදීමෙන් පසු මෙම ඖෂධය භාවිතය වහාම ක්‍රියාත්මක වන පරිදි නවතා දැමීමට තීරණය කළ බව සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යංශය පවසයි.

Temporary ban on Depo Medroxy Progesterone Acetate, total ban on Lindane

The Health Ministry yesterday deployed a special medical team to probe the death of a woman after being administered a birth control injection at the Rambukwila Health Centre.

The ministry also took action to temporarily ban Depo Medroxy Progesterone Acetate.

The Family Planning Bureau had earlier informed the Drugs Regulatory Authority about the woman's death.

Drugs Regulatory Authority director Dr Hemanth Beneragama has instructed to submit a report on the death of the woman after consulting her relatives and the medical centre where the patient underwent treatment.

The Regional Health Service director and the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths will also be questioned regarding the incident.

Dr Beneragama said Depo Medroxy Progesterrone Acetate will be temporarily banned until the final report is issued.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has also banned the use of Lindane which is used to treat head lice and scabies.

Dr Beneragama issued a directive to ban this drug with immediate effect after it was found that long term exposure to Lindane could result in serious medical problems such as brain damage and cancer.

Cancer-causing lotion banned

The topical medicine, Lindane, prescribed against lice and scabies, was banned by the Health Ministry with immediate effect yesterday after it was revealed that long term exposure to the drug resulted in serious medical problems such as brain damage and cancer.

Health Ministry Spokesman, W. D. Wanninayake said that the Drug Regulatory Authority had issued directives to ban the ointment due to side-effects and it had been used as a pesticide in high concentration for nearly 30 years.

Wanninayake said the Health Minister had instructed the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on drugs to study the issue and take a decision.

Since there were three alternatives which were safe and effective for treating lice and scabies the TAC had decided to ban Lindane (also known as gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) with immediate effect. (DJ)
