Medical Supplies Division (MSD) Director Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe dismissed the allegation made by Consultant surgeon of the De Soysa Maternity hospital Dr. S. A. Ruwan Pathirana that Madushani Nisansala of Nittabuwa of a 27–year-old-mother who died last August due to quality failure of the antibiotics administered.
Dr. Jayasinghe told The Island that the MSD did not issue any quality failed antibiotics to any hospital last August. All drugs and injections imported had to be quality certified by the National Drug Quality Assurance laboratory. It was an independent laboratory which had been acting as an additional government analyst.
He pointed out that he had all documentary evidence to prove that antibiotics issued to hospitals, including the De Soysa Maternity hospital had been quality assured by the National Drug Quality Assurance laboratory. ‘It was not logical to make statements in an irresponsible manner that the antibiotics available in 2011 August were sub-standard’, he said.
Dr. Jayasinghe added that according to medical reports, the cause of death of this woman could be attributed to dysfunction of some organs and severe infections developing in the stomach and spine.
