දේශීය තැපැල් ගාස්‌තුවල මිල සංශෝධනය කිරීමට රජය තීරණය කර ඇතැයි තැපැල් සේවා අමාත්‍යාංශ අභ්‍යන්තර ආරංචි මාර්ග සඳහන් කරයි. මෙම නව ගාස්‌තු සංශෝධනයට අනුව දැනට ක්‍රියාත්මක වන රුපියල් පහේ තැපැල් ගාස්‌තුව රුපියල් දහය දක්‌වා වැඩි කිරීමට නියමිතයි.

සාමාන්‍ය ලියුමක්‌ තැපැල් මගින් බෙදාහැරීම සඳහා රජයට රුපියල් 17 ක්‌ වැය වෙන බව සඳහන් කරන තැපැල් සේවා අමාත්‍යාංශය එම නිසා දැනට ක්‍රියාත්මක වන දේශීය තැපැල් ගාස්‌තුවල මිල වැඩි කළ යුතු බව කියා සිටී.

පාඩු පිට පවත්වාගෙන යන තැපැල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව සඳහා මහා භාණ්‌ඩාගාරය විසින් වාර්ෂිකව ලබාදෙන ප්‍රතිපාදන විශාල ප්‍රමාණයක්‌ ද මේ වන විට කපා දමා තිබේ. තැපැල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ පාඩු පියවා ගැනීම සඳහා දේශීය තැපැල් ගාස්‌තුවල මිල කඩිනමින් සංශෝධනය කරන ලෙස මහා භාණ්‌ඩාගාරය තැපැල් සේවා අමාත්‍යාංශයට සහ තැපැල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවට දැනුම් දී ඇත.

නව ගාස්‌තු සංශෝධනය පිළිබඳව තැපැල් වෘත්තීය සමිති එකමුතුවට අයත් ශ්‍රී ලංකා තැපැල් හා විදුලි සංදේශ සේවා සංගමයේ ලේකම් චින්තක බණ්‌ඩාර මහතා සඳහන් කළේ සාමාන්‍ය තැපැල් ගාස්‌තුවල මිල වැඩි කිරීම තුළින් සිදුවන්නේ ජනතාව තවදුරටත් තැපෑලෙන් ඈත්වීම පමණක්‌ බවයි. තැපැල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව පාඩු ලබන්නේ එහි පවතින අකාර්යක්‍ෂම පාලනය නිසා බවද ඔහු පැවසීය.

Increase in postal rates likely soon

The government is likely to increase the postal rates soon from the minimum Rs. 5 to Rs 10 and so forth, if the recommendations of a Posts Ministry committee to Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga find his favour.

There had been a long awaited need to increase the rates as they had not been increased for a long time and everything has gone up in price since the last increase, Posts Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando told The Island last night.

He said that a Committee appointed by the Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga comprising Additional Secretary Vineetha Kaluarachchi and Post Master General M.K.D. Dissanayake had two rounds of meetings with the Minister, though no finality had been reached at this stage.

Even if there was an increase, firstly, it had to be approved by not only the Minister but also the Cabinet, he said.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunication Officers’ Union Navaratna Bandara said that there was no tangible reason for the increase in the postal rates but the soaring overheads were due to waste, mismanagement and rampant corruption in the department.

He also said that the postal service was meant to be service oriented and not a profit making body.

The recent go slow and the overtime boycott by the postal workers was also due to the allegations of rampant corruption where union members told this newspaper that the projected losses for last year was in the region of Rs. 3.5 billion.
