Unregistered sex stimulants available in pharmacies
By Dilanthi Jayamanne
The Cosmetic Devices and Drug Regulatory Authority (CDDA) yesterday warned the public against using unregistered sexual stimulation drugs available in pharmacies.
Quoting the CDDA the spokesman for the Health Ministry said yesterday that there were over 50 such drugs available in the market.
The spokesman said the CDDA had registered only six drugs to be used for sexual stimulation. They include Viagra, Cupid 40, Tri-bull and Homotex. However, the Authority was unable to take legal action against retailing unregistered drugs as there were no complaints made by those who used them. Pharmacy owners had formed their own code for users and the drug types were only sold to regular users known by them as ‘members.’
A majority of those sexual stimulants contained a harmful chemical known as ‘Sildenafil citrate,’ which increased the blood pressure and thereby the heart beat of the user. It increased the vulnerability to heart failure and brain damage, he said.
The side effects of using Sildenafil citrate he said were abdominal pain, weight loss, digestive problems, nervousness and restlessness, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, severe fatigue, depression, skin rash and itching and toxic psychosis psychotic episodes. The chemical also cause addiction.
The spokesman warned that such unregistered drugs should be taken under a doctor’s recommendation according to the person’s age and stamina. Pharmacies had been instructed to ask for a doctor’s prescription from customers. However, there were those who use more than the prescribed dosage which was harmful and could cause death, he added.

Rhino-size sex problem at the Dehiwala zoo
By Ifham Nizam
Zoo keepers of the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwela are doing their utmost to create more breeding space for rhinos, one of the most difficult animals to breed in captivity.
Zoo Director General Bashwara Senanka Gunaratna has instructed officials to construct a tunnel-like area and expand the enclosure where the zoo’s pair of rhinoceros is kept.
Zoo officials said that it was not easy breeding one of the rare species without the right environmental conditions.
However, the impossible was now being reached with new facilities being created for the animals. One barrier for breeding rhinos at the zoo was the constant fights the animals got involved in.
When a male and a female were put together, the animals attacked each other, officials said.
The construction of the habitat would be completed within three months, according to the Director General.

SLPA to woo more investors for Trinco Port
By Pabodha Hettige
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will soon advertise calling for investors to start port related industries at Trincomalee.
"The investment opportunities will be advertised in mid November according to the plans made by the SLPA," Trinco Port Residential Manager J. A. Chandrarathne said.
The closing date for the application would be December 31, 2012. The port authorities had already received a large number of applications for different investments but the processing had been halted till the deadline for applications, he said.
When selecting potential investors, priority would be given to those projects that could generate large incomes to the port and provide greater numbers of employment opportunities to the locals, residing in the vicinity.
According to Chandrarathne, currently, a Holcim Cement plant is under construction there and a Prima products processing plant is already functioning.
The officials would fully depend on the investors for the port development process while roads, electricity and other infrastructural developments would be provided by the government to a certain extent at the preliminary stage.
"Surveying of a land area of 5,000 acres, allocated to be given to the investors and for the purposes of tourism is in progress and would be completed by the end of December this year," Chandrarathne said.

Checks on beauty salons from Nov 1
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
The Health Ministry will inspect all beauty and hair salons countrywide from November 1, in terms of the Cosmetic Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority regulations.
This is to ensure that they confirm to safety standards and quality measures, on the direction of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena.
According to the spokesman, educating all salon owners commenced yesterday from the Ampara district. Prior to carrying out hair or beauty treatment, the salon owner should question the customer about his/her food allergies or any other allergy to hair or beauty treatment. It is a must to carry out a skin sensitivity test on all customers. Hair or beauty treatment should be done only after two days of the test.
The test should be conducted on `to be brides' two weeks prior to the wedding day. Any client with allergic reactions such as swelling, red eyes, skin rashes etc should be admitted to hospital as soon as possible. A new blade should be used for each customer to prevent HIV infections.
It is possible for a person to die within a short period of 20 minutes if he or she is subjected to a severe allergy and allergic shock. This type of severe allergies can be caused by expired, unregistered and low quality chemicals and similar substances used for beauty treatment, creams used for facials etc. Such products should not be "expired" and of in high quality. HIV can be spread through used blades, the spokesman said.

If Sri Lanka allows three million persons to work abroad, a number of problems in the country will be solved, he added.
The Senior Minister was addressing the launching ceremony of State of the World Population Report 2011 titled “People and possibilities in a world of 7 billion” and the Population Symposium on seven billion held at the Galle Face Hotel, yesterday. It had been organized by the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Population Association of Sri Lanka (PASL).

Born free and wild
Ishara Jayawardane
“Born Free, as free as the wind blows…
as free as the grass grows…
born free to follow your heart…
Live free and beauty surrounds you…
the world still astounds you…
each time you look at a star…
stay free, where no walls divide you…
you’re free as the roaring tide…
so there’s no need to hide.........”
- Don Black (lyrics) and John Barry (music)

“We are limited to 13 South and South East Asian countries that have elephants which are Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia Laos, Indonesia and Sumatra. The global population of Asian Elephants is around 35,000 – 45,000 and in Sri Lanka alone we have about 5000 – 6000.
“Sri Lanka is probably the best place in the world to see Asian elephants.
Elephants are much loved all over the world there is no culture today that doesn’t know an elephant and there is a great wonder in watching and observing these animals,” Centre for Conservation and Research Chairman and Smithsonian Institution Research Associate in USA Dr. Prithiviraj Fernando said.
If you look at elephants, you’ll see that they have a very distinct social structure. The females and the young ones live in herds.

If you look at elephants, you’ll see that they have a very distinct social structure. The females and the young ones live in herds.
Males and females
The herds that we see are mainly composed of females and young ones. Males, after becoming adults at around 10-15 years of age, lead solitary lives.
Adult males are of course much larger and they can be three times the size of adult females.

Baby with the mother

An elephant who has being shot

A tusker
There is sexual dimorphism - A big difference in size amongst adult males and females.
The gestation period is 18-22 months, added Dr. Fernando.
Between the age of 10 to 20 years, bulls undergo an annual phenomenon known as “musth”. This is a period where the testosterone level is up to 100 times greater than non-“musth” periods and they become extremely aggressive.
An elephant will usually live for about 40- 50 years in the wild.
Once a female gives birth she usually does not breed again until the first calf is weaned resulting in a 4-5 year birth interval.
“There is also a big competition amongst the males to get at the females to mate with them. Where females are concerned bigger is better and it is the bigger bull that wins.
But how do they become bigger? To get bigger they have to get at the largest resources and to do that they access cultivated crops.
Human-Elephant conflict
This is where all the problems related to the Human-Elephant conflict begin,” elaborated Dr. Fernando.
Approximately 50-60 humans and 200-220 elephants die annually because of this conflict. It also results in a significant economic loss to farmers, contributing to rural poverty.
Consequently the human-elephant conflict has become a major conservation, socio economic and political issue. “Over the past 15 years or so we have done a lot of research on the human elephant conflict and for the past six years or so with the wildlife conservation department.
Currently what is done is they dart the elephant with an anesthetic, tie him up put him in a truck and release him into a national park.
However, this is not a permanent solution because simply they don’t stay there. They ultimately wander off in a different direction,” added Dr. Fernando Something has to be done about it and just talking about it won’t help, words have to be put to action and to do that, the corporation of everyone is needed.

Billion of rupees wasted from online lottery
In another glaring instance where public money has been wasted due to corruption, the country has lost a massive Rs.983 million as a result of an investment made in a Norwegian company a few years ago for an online lottery, the parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has revealed.
The lottery had been introduced during 2002-2004 by a then United National Party (UNP) government minister who later crossed over to the government. A COPE member told the Daily Mirror on condition of anonymity that the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Cabinet had however written off this transaction on October 28, 2009 apparently because of the influence wielded by this politician now in government ranks. “If this lottery scheme had been in use, Sri Lanka’s Development Lotteries Board would have been adversely affected,” he said and added that this powerful politician even contested the October 8 local council elections on the government’s ticket. The COPE is planning to present its report to parliament before the November budget. It has unearthed several instances of corruption, wastage, financial irregularities and malpractices running into billions of rupees. (Kelum Bandara)

Residents hit by sea erosion
From A.M. Jazeel, our Addalachchenai Corr.
People living in close proximity to the Oluvil port, especially those immediately north of it, complain that the construction of the port’s two breakwaters has aggravated sea erosion which has destroyed a number of coconut palms and even cottages.
They also claim that the sea has already swallowed much of the land in the region.
Chief Engineer of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Ms. Chandrakanthi Lokuhewage, who is overseeing the construction of the harbour, when asked for comment, admitted that erosion was taking place north of the port. She said they had already got Lanka Hydraulic Institute, Moratuwa, to do a study of it. The report submitted by LHI had recommended the construction of three breakwaters off the coast to solve the problem.
Lokuhewage said the Ports Authority was having discussions yesterday in Oluvil with a Danish government official, who is here to monitor the progress of the project, to utilise part of the Euro 46.1 million loan extended by the Danish government for the construction of the Oluvil Port, to build three breakwaters.
"They are keen not to leave behind any problems with any project undertaken by them and we are hopeful of getting the funds released to build the breakwaters soon", Lokuhewage said.
Meanwhile, the Danish contractor M. T. Hogaard, who has undertaken the construction of the port, having missed several deadlines to complete it, is said to be still struggling with the construction of its two breakwater heads and at present has temporarily abandoned that section due to the prevalent rough seas.
Sources said they expected the contractor to bring in a heavy dredger and heavy lift buckets to resume the job early next year.
Local engineers are full of praise for all other infrastructure work done by the contractor, including a 4.5 km boundary wall, cold rooms, ice plant, fish auction, net mending facility and separate administration buildings for a fisheries harbour and commercial port.
At the time of awarding the contract in 2008, the contractor was required to complete the project in 27 months. Later he was given a further nine month extension, which, too, elapsed last July. he was again given time till December this year. Now, the contractor has asked for time till July next year to complete the job.
Meanwhile, Addalachchenai Divisional Secretary Mohammed Naseer said that applications received from the victims of sea erosion had been referred to authorities concerned for remedial action.
