Resettlement issue in forest land GMSL Case

Minister Rishad given time to file objections

The Nation, Thursday, 26 June 2014 09:47

The Court of Appeal (CA) yesterday (June 25) gave a time of almost one full month to file objections to a writ application by an environmental organization which claimed that the Minister Rishad Bathiudeen and few others are to clear around 2400 acres of forest lands in northern province.

The petition had been brought by the Green Movement of Sri Lanka Cabinet Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, the District Secretary of Mannar, and a few others and the CA gave time till August 29 to respondents to file objections.

The Green Movement said that respondent parties were in an effort to clear nearly 2,339 acres of forest land in Mannar, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya districts to re-settle ‘displaced Muslims’. They argued that the destruction of forest would cause environmental hazards as the vegetation and the animals would be destroyed very badly. The Green Movement has also highlighted the historical importance of the area which the respondents have identified to clear and settle civilians.
