Marine protection awareness programme today

The Marine Environment Protection Authority will launch a special programme today (08) to create awareness on marine protection. The programme will be held on board SLNS ‘Jetliner’ at the Colombo Port.
Assistant Manager of Western Province Marine Environment Protection Authority Thalatha Srini Ranasinghe told The Island, on Monday (06), that ‘International Ocean Day’ would be commemorated with the theme ‘Our Oceans: Greening Our Future’.
Ranasinghe said the focus of the programme would be on accidents in the sea, ocean pollution and other issues related to oceans. She said that District Secretaries, Harbour Managers, students, teachers and those working for Marine Environment Institutions would be attending the ceremony.
Prof. Samantha Hettiarachchi of the Moratuwa University will speak on ‘Strategies of the Ocean’ and Dr. Mahesh Jayaweera will discuss ‘’Methods of Marine Pollution’.
The magazine ‘Sathsamudura’ will be launched and a ‘Waste Management Plan’ would be introduced for the Tangalle Green Fisheries Harbour by the Department of Coast Guard in collaboration with the Marine Environment Protection Authority, Ms. Ranasinghe said.
