Chamikara WEERASINGHE

National water supply and Drainage Board yesterday announced they have launched a Rs 2500 million water supply project in Muttur to cater to the needs of 15,000 families as part of the government's program to make water accessible to every citizen in the Eastern Province by 2015.

Board's Eastern Province Deputy General Manager M K Hapuarachchi yesterday said the Muttur Water Supply Project is expected to cater to the needs of hundreds of displaced families that have been resettled in Muttur besides others who live in its townships and suburbs. .

The Asian Development Bank is funding the project. Hapuarachchi said, "the ADB spends 80 percent of the Rs 2500 million project while the government funds the rest. He said a couple of water projects are under way to meet the water requirements of the people in the Trincomalee district as at present.

There is a severe shortage of water in Trincomalee.

The project will address the problem. The worst affected Kinniya area will be self-sufficient in water after the project's completion, he said.

"We are planning to complete the project by mid 2012,he added.

A Japanese funded water project is going on in the Ampara district," said Hapuarachchi.

"Our target is to meet 40 percent of the water needs in the Eastern Province with pipe borne water schemes by 2014," he said.

"We are taking steps to meet the water needs of the Eastern Province with dug wells, tube wells and water pumps, in addition to providing pipe borne water supply schemes," he added.
