දකුණු පළාත තුළ සිදු වූ අයහපත් කාලගුණ තත්ත්වය පිළිබඳ විශේෂ අනතුරු ඇඟවීමක් සිදු නොකිරීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් කාලගුණ දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවෙන් වාර්තාවක් කැඳවීමට ආපදා කළමනාකරණ ඇමැති මහින්ද අමරවීර මහතා පියවර ගෙන තිබේ.

ඒ පිළිබඳ කඩිනමින් වාර්තාවක් ලබාගන්නා ලෙස තමන් අමාත්‍යාංශ ලේකම්වරයාට උපදෙස් ලබා දුන් බව හෙතෙම කීවේය.

මාතර දිස්ත්‍රික් ලේකම් කාර්යාලයේ පෙරේදා (26) පැවැති මාධ්‍ය හමුවේ දී ඇමැතිවරයා එසේ ප්‍රකාශ කළේ ය.

එම වාර්තාවෙන් සෑහීමකට පත් නොවන්නේ නම් කමිටුවක් පත්කර ඒ පිළිබඳ සොයා බලන බව ද අමරවීර මහතා කීවේය.

හදිසි ආපාදාවක දී දේපළවලට පෙර ජීවිත බේරා ගැනීමට ඕනෑම පියවරක් ගන්නා ලෙස ජනාධිපතිතුමා උපදෙස් ලබා දී ඇති බව ද ඇමැතිවරයා සඳහන් කළේ ය.

යම් සිදුවීමක් ගැන අනවශ්‍ය කටකතා පතුරුවන්නේ නම් ඊට නීතිමය පියවර ගන්නා බව ද අමරවීර මහතා පැවසීය.

මිය ගිය පුද්ගලයකුගේ මරණ කටයුතු කිරීම සඳහා රුපියල් 15000ක් ආධාර ලබාදීමට පියවර ගෙන තිබෙන බවද ඒ මහතා කීවේය.මෙහිදී ඇමැති ඩලස් අලහප්පෙරුම මහතා ද අදහස් ප්‍රකාශ කළේ ය.

ඉකුත් දිනවල ඇතිවූ අයහපත් කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය පිළිබඳව ධීවරයන්ට විශේෂ පණිවුඩයක්‌ මගින් දැනුම් නොදීම පිළිබඳ වාර්තාව අද (28 වැනිදා) කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව විසින් ආපදා කළමනාකරණ ඇමැති මහින්ද අමරවීර මහතාට භාර දීමට නියමිතය.

ඉකුත් දිනවල මුහුද රළුවීම පිළිබඳ විශේෂ නිවේදනයක්‌ ධීවරයන්ට නිකුත් කළේද යන්න පිළිබඳව සොයා බලා තමන්ට වාර්තාවක්‌ භාර දෙන ලෙස ඇමැතිවරයා පසුගිය සිකුරාදා කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවට උපදෙස්‌ දුන්නේය.

අයහපත් කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය හේතුවෙන් මුහුදු ගිය ධීවර යාත්‍රා 12 ක්‌ද එහි සිටි ධීවරයෝ 30 දෙනෙක්‌ පමණද අතුරුදන් වූහ.

Govt. demands to know why Met Dept slumbered Natural disasters

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has asked the Meteorology Department to explain its failure to warn the public of gale force winds which left a trail of destruction in several parts of the country, especially in the southern province in the last few days.

Secretary to the Disaster Management Ministry has been instructed by the minister to obtain a detailed report from the Met Department on the matter.

The Met Department did not issue an early warning even after the Indian authorities had alerted it to the possibility of cyclonic winds.

Minister Amaraweera told The Island that 19 people had died and 43 others were reported missing while nearly 13,000 persons were displaced due to heavy rains, floods and strong winds.

He said among the missing were that 30 fishermen lost with their 12 crafts. The Met Department had been given time till tomorrow to submit its report, he said.

Unless the Met Departmentcomes up with a satisfactory explanation, a committee would be appointed to probe its failure, Minister Amaraweera said.

Probe into Met Dept. lapses

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said, information has been received that the Meteorological Department was unable to provide early reporting regarding Friday's cyclonic conditions which caused havoc in the South. Therefore the Ministry Secretary has informed the Meteorological Department to conduct an investigation regarding this lapse with immediate effect.

Further Minister Amaraweera said that if the report is not to his satisfaction a committee will be appointed to find out the reasons and the officers responsible will be held answerable.

He said action has been taken to provide cooked food for the displaced people. Support of NGOs will be obtained to provide essential items for the displaced, he said.

Compensation will be provided to people who lost their homes and Rs 15000 will be provided for each death.

Around 20 life jackets will be provided for the security of fishermen.

Addressing the meeting Youth Affairs Minister Dullus Alahapperuma said, it is very tragic to note that certain officials had caused panic among the people by declaring that a Tsunami will come. Action will be taken to remove trees that cause danger in the Matara district.
