A team from Nochchiyagama police who lay in ambush in disguise as firewood cutters in the Rekadawewa Forest Reserve arrested two poachers who killed wild animal to supply meat to restaurants and hotels in the area. Police inquiries revealed that they had been killing wild animals in the Wilpattu National Park and the bordering forest reserves as well. The suspects were in possession of a 12 bore shotgun, two live cartridges, a hand axe, a knife and the carcasses of an iguana, and an antelope. The suspects were from Panankaniya in Nochchiyagama police area. A police team under SI Nuwan Tilakaratne, Sergeant 29745 Kirthi, constables 2814 Mahinda, 515193 Bandara and 47928 Ajith carried out the raid on the instructions of the OIC Nochchiyagama police, Sarath Kumarasinghe and ASP, Thambutthegama Pradeep Perera.
