The highest number of incidents of speeding on the Southern Expressway was recorded by the Traffic Police last Friday, bringing the total number to 36 cases, Police Media Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.
He said two pedestrians trespassing into the Southern Expressway were nabbed by the police. The total number of traffic violations in the country on Friday was recorded as 337.
"Many motorists have been detected, over-speeding, not heeding traffic signs and regulations and not keeping to the left side of the road" the police media spokesman said. More traffic policemen will be deployed on the eight entry points to the Southern Expressway to nab motorists driving under the influence of liquor and over-speeding.
Meanwhile, it was reported that six persons die every day on Sri Lanka's highways due to accidents. Eighty five percent of accidents occur due to the carelessness of drivers while 15 percent is attributed to mechanical defects. According to Traffic Headquarters, 100-150 road accidents are reported each day of which 45 percent are serious.
The total number of traffic offences up to September 2011 stands at 27,388 police said.
