The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) will implement seaweed and sea cucumber farming in Sri Lanka, said NARA chairman Dr Hiran Jayawardena. The NARA will implement projects to develop the aquaculture industry to coincide with its 30th anniversary.
The seaweed and sea cucumber farming are two of these projects. Pilot projects will commence in the North and East Provinces, sources said.
Shipwrecks are the best places for fish breeding. They have identified 23 wrecked ship sites in the Eastern Province. The NARA will also help to draw up nautical maps which are useful to the fisheries industries, the sources said.
Shipwrecks will help develop the tourism industry. While NARA will also take measures to preserve whales.
