A large scale compost plant complex has been constructed in Hikkaduwa to control the garbage problem and maintain a pleasant environment in the city which is a key attraction of tourists, a spokesperson of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) told the Daily News yesterday.
He said the complex has been constructed at Rs 83 million in Monroviawatta in Hikkaduwa under the Pilisaru Solid Waste Management National Project of the CEA. Garbage collected from the Galle Municipal Council, Hikkaduwa Urban Council and Ambalangoda, Rajgama, Bope Poddala and Balapitiya Pradeshiya Sabhas would be transported and recycled in this plant.
This project would help to provide a sustainable solution to the garbage problem in the Southern Province making it cleaner, pleasant and more conducive for the developing tourism industry. Similar large scale composting plants are in operation in Medirigiriya, Anuradhapura, Kolonnawa and Kalutara.
CEA Chairman Charitha Herath recently went on an inspection tour of the composting plant complex which has just completed construction to check whether it is built to required standards.
The project technical officers, Chairmen and officers of relevant Pradeshiya Sabhas and officers of the construction company also participated in the inspection tour.
