Sagara University launches whale observation boat service

The Sagara University has launched a boat service, in association with a private tourism institute, for local and foreign tourists to observe dolphins and whales in close proximity.

Sri Lanka Sagara University was set up twelve years ago by the then Fisheries Minister and present President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Currently it is under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development.

The dolphins and whales observation boat service commenced its service from Galle harbour in the presence of Minister Dallas Alahapperuma and Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Maheepala Herath. They too participated in the maiden observation trip with the other local and foreign tourists.

The new boat service will draw more tourists to the country.

In the sea off the Sri Lankan Coast dolphins and whales often appear in large numbers. They are seen not only in the Southern and Eastern seas but also in the sea off Kalpitiya. Among the variety of whales roaming, are world’s largest Blue Whales which grow upto nearly 184 metres. Out of nearly 80 varieties of whales, in our seas, 26 are seen.
