වසර 91 කට පසුව කොළඹ දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌කයට බලපෑ වැඩිම සීතල දේශගුණික තත්ත්වය ඊයේ (28 වැනිදා) අලුයම් කාලයේ උදාවූ බව කාලගුණ විද්‍යාඥ අනුෂා වර්ණසූරිය මහත්මිය "දිවයින"ට පැවසුවාය.
කොළඹ දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌කයේ ඊයේ අලුයම උෂ්ණත්වය සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 18.2 ක්‌ ලෙස සටහන් වූ අතර 1920 දෙසැම්බර් මාසයේ කොළඹ උෂ්ණත්වය සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 17.3 ක්‌ ලෙස වාර්තා වී තිබේ.නුවරඑළිය දිස්‌ත්‍රික්‌කයේ උෂ්ණත්වය ඊයේ අලුයම සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 7.7 ක්‌ ලෙස වාර්තා විය.
මීට වර්ෂ 131 කට පෙර එනම් 1880 දෙසැම්බර් මාසයේ නුවරඑළියේ උෂ්ණත්වය සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 1.1 ක්‌ ලෙස සටහන් වී ඇත.
1914 ජූලි මාසයේ සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 3.7 ක්‌ ලෙස ද 1929 ජනවාරි මාසයේ සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 2.6 ක්‌ ලෙස ද නුරවඑළියේ උෂ්ණත්වය වාර්තා වී තිබිණි.
මේ දිනවල උතුරු ඉන්දියාව හරහා සුළං ධාරා ශ්‍රී ලංකාව දෙසට හමා එන බවත්. එම සුළඟ දැඩි සීතලකින් යුක්‌තවීම හා රාත්‍රී කාලයේ අහස වළාකුළු රහිත වීමෙන් පොළොව සීතල වීමත් මෙම සීතලට හේතුව බව කාලගුණ විද්‍යාඥ වර්ණසූරිය මහත්මිය කීවාය.
උතුරු ඉන්දියාවේ අග්‍රා ප්‍රදේශයේ ඊයේ අලුයම උෂ්ණත්වය සෙල්සියස්‌ අංශක 2.8 ක්‌ දක්‌වා පහත වැටී ඇති අතර එම සීතල උහුලා ගත නොහැකිව විශාල පිරිසක්‌ දැඩි අසීරුතාවකට පත්ව ඇතැයිද වාර්තා වේ.

Cbo records coldest weather in 91 years

Colombo yesterday experienced the lowest temperature in 91 years, the Met. Department said.
Meteorologist Ms Anusha Warnasuriya told The Island that the temperature recorded yesterday morning was 18.2 Celsius, which was the lowest recorded temperature in Colombo since December 1920. The temperature in Colombo in December 1920 was 17.3 Celsius.
The temperature in most areas had decreased due to the North East Monsoon, known as ‘Winter Monsoon’, she said. The temperature in Anurdhapura fell to 18 degrees, Jaffna 19 degrees and Nuwara Eliya 7.7 degrees.
Ms Warnasuruiya said such cold weather was usual in the month of December. The cold was not felt during the past years because of a heat generating effect in the Bay of Bengal. The country should now be prepared for cold weather in the months of December and January since the heat generating effect in the Bay of Bengal was no more.

A low temperature of 18.2 Celsius degrees was recorded in Colombo yesterday morning, Meteorology Department duty forecaster P G Yasaratne told the Daily News. He observed that the temperature recorded in many parts of the island yesterday morning was below the usual temperature of those areas during this month.
He said that there had been only few records in the past where the temperature in Colombo had dropped less than 19 Celsius degrees.
The lowest temperature recorded in Colombo was 17.3 Celsius degrees. This was in 1920. Yasaratne said the temperature in the island is usually low in December and January than the other months, and added the dry wind from Northern India with the cyclonic conditions prevailing in the Bay of Bengal had been the reason for the low temperature. He said that the temperature showed a two to four Celsius degrees drop in most parts of the island yesterday.
He noted that the minimum temperature in Badulla dropped to 10.8 Celsius degrees yesterday from 17.2 Celsius degrees on Tuesday, while the minimum temperature in Batticaloa had dropped to 19.5 Celsius degrees from 23 Celsius degrees.
