The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Special Investigations Unit has collected over Rs. 50 million as fines from power pirates during operations throughout the island in the last few months. A number of raids were also carried out in the Northern and Eastern provinces, said Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.
According to the Mahinda Chinthana Future Vision, the Power and Energy Ministry has planned to launch several electricity projects throughout the country to supply electricity to the whole country by 2012. Over 80 percent of those programmes have been completed, he added.
The minister was addressing the opening ceremonies of three power projects in the Batticaloa district established under the Nagenahira Navodaya development programme, recently.
The minister urged the public not to follow illegal methods of getting electricity when the government is trying to provide every household with electricity.
