Litter bins a must in trains to combat dengue

KANDY – The need for litter bins in railway compartments, to prevent passengers throwing articles out through windows was stressed at the Kandy District Dengue Control meeting on Monday 09.

Disposable articles such as empty cans and yoghurt cups thrown out by passengers have become breeding places for dengue mosquitoes, officials attending the district dengue reviewing committee meeting said.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, who was presiding jointly with Kandy G. A. Gamini Seneviratne, expressing his agreement with the proposal, said that the Railway Department should be informed of the necessity of installing of litter collection containers in passenger compartments.

The Chief Minister also said that steps should be taken to educate passengers on dengue prevention.

The meeting was told that the dengue control campaign of the Kandy District had been successful and the district had remained at the third place in the country. First being Colombo with 2,100 dengue cases reported during the month under review and Gampaha district as the second with 1,600 cases reported. Kandy District had two deaths during the month. One was reported from the Akurana Pradeshiya Secretariat division while the other was from the Pasbage division.

Kandy Provicial Director of Health Services Dr. W. A. K. Wijesinghe, Provincial Epidemiologist Dr (Mrs) Anoma de Silva, Kandy Mayor Mahindra Ratwatte was among the participants at the meeting.
