CAA raids during festive season nets Rs. 11.2 million in fines

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) conducted 4,570 raids during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival period and earned Rs. 11.2 million in fines.

Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando said that 3,105 raids were conducted by the CAA in March, while 1.465 raids were conducted from April 1 to 11.

He said that the Special Unit of the CAA successfully raided wholesale outlets and took into custody consignments of rice, dhal, potatoes, big onions, semolina etc. weighing over 50,000 kilos, unfit for human consumption.

The CAA was successful in thwarting food unfit for human consumption reaching the market and they were doing their utmost to protect the consumers and he requested the Chairman of the CAA Rumy Marzook to continue with raids, keeping in mind the welfare of consumers at all times.
