New seed farm to turn out 6000 bushels

By Pabodha Hettige

The ministry of Agriculture says that they are expecting a paddy harvest of 6,000 bushels during the next season from the crops of the recently opened Murunkan seed farm in Mannar.

The farm was officially declared open by the Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Yapa Abewardane on April 07 after being abandoned for nearly 30 years due to the war. Currently, only paddy has been cultivated in the farm.

The government had spent nearly Rs.180 million to revive the seed farm, which had been in near ruins.

Ministry sources said that plans were afoot to produce all sorts of seeds at the Murunkan seed farm in the near future for the convenience of the farmers and to enhance the crop cultivation in the area.

Meanwhile, the sources also said that upon a request made by minister Yapa, the Ministry of Fisheries had taken steps to donate Rs. 100,000 each to the families, whose members had died in the cyclone, late last year.

Nearly 25 fishermen died and some others were displaced in the Matara district in November last year due to the cyclone.
