The project commenced a last year to computerise the administration of the Rideegama hospital has been totally disrupted. The computers cost the government over two million rupees and they are now simply gathering dust. Six lap tops and 16 desk tops are lying idle.
The Rideegama hospital was chosen for the 2011 pilot project conducted in the Kurunegala after completing one in the Eastern Province.
Well informed sources said that the project operated very successfully for about an year and now only one computer kept in the OPD is used to issue cards to patients who are registered.
A hospital employees said that following the Tsunami in the Eastern Province, many important documents were lost or destroyed.
The Red Cross introduced computers to the hospitals in the East and it was very successful.
The day to day work in even the small hospitals in the Eastern Capital have been computerised it made work easy as there was no need to store the documents and diagnosis and details of the patients could be traced easily while internet access helped the staff to search for names and varieties of required drugs for an illness.
Though the project commenced in Kurunegala was a failure, the work in six hospitals in the Ratnapura district have been computerised and are operating successfully.
