Indian flu pandemic too close to Lanka for comfort

There is grave concern regarding Sri Lanka’s situation following the reports of over 680 cases of swine flu and a death toll of 35 in neighboring India. The Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit has, however reassured the public that they need not fear as a quarantine system was well in place in case of any emergency.

Chief of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Paba Palihawadana said yesterday that the Unit was prepared to face the situation if the pandemic Influenza H1N1 filtered into the country.

Health Ministry sources also said that there was no need to panic. There was surveillance at the airport and ports. Suspect cases were screened for any influenza condition, they said.

The suspect A(H1N1) death reported from Sri Lanka this week was due to a respiratory infection. However any suspect swine flu case samples should be sent to the Medical Research Institute (MRI) for confirmation, they added.

According to NDTV of India from the beginning of March till April 9,689 cases of H1N1 were reported from Maharashtra (392 cases), Karnataka (104), Andhra Pradesh (66), Rajasthan (84), Tamil Nadu (28), Delhi (6), Gujarat (5) and one each in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
