There are several conditions and requirements to be fulfilled before performing animal slaughter for Hajj Festival and the butchers should have a valid licence issued by the Municipal Veterinary Department, Chief Municipal Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. S. D. Ileperuma said.
Muslims should slaughter animals in their proper places and only performed by authorized persons. For Muslims it is customary for goats or sheep to be sacrificed in celebration of the Feast of the Sacrifice.
According to the regulations and the chapter XII of the by-laws, cattle or goats which are lawfully bought, a receipt of purchase should be obtained on which the owner has signed on a stamp to ensure the sale was by the rightful owner. To establish the identity of the cattle a document including the age and colour should be forwarded.
Dr Illeperuma pointed out that the special licence would be issued to the owner mentioned in the receipt. The animal should be at the place when the animal was inspected by the veterinary department.
He added that the place of ‘Kuruban’ should be approximately hundred metres away from a school or other religious place of worship except a Muslim mosque.
The place of ‘Kuruban’ should be properly covered, In the process of the act of ‘Kuruban’ the place should be built in manner that the faeces could easily be washed away. Bones and skins of the animals should be removed in proper manner.
