Expert warns of high incidence of diabetes in children

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

Sri Lanka Medical Association President Prof. Sanath P. Lamabadusuriya Wednesday warns that diabetes is increasingly affecting younger age groups in Sri Lanka due to dietary disorders and lack of exercise.

Lamabadusuriya, who is emeritus Professor of paediatrics addressing a media conference said, "I have 40 years of experience as a paediatric specialist. In 1970 only about three or four cases of diabetes in children were reported. But now the number of cases is increasing rapidly."

The World Diabetes Day (WDD) is marked every year on November 14. This year the theme of the WDD is "Act on Diabetes now."

To mark the WDD, Health Ministry will conduct awareness programs with the assistance of the Nirogi Lanka Foundation, Sri Lanka Medical Association, Sri Lanka Diabetes Association and other organisations.

Statistics reveal that in 2006, over 246 million of the world population suffered from diabetes and the number is expected to exceed 380 million by 2025.
