Microscopic view in Colombo jam/cordial factories

By Carol Aloysius

All manufacturing plants producing jams and cordials are to come under microscopic view by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). This followed a drive to rid the city from contaminated food products being sold in the open markets, CMC sources told The Nation.

“We are not targeting any specific product and simply taking precautions to ensure the jams and cordials people now consume is safe and free from bacteria”, a CMC health official said. Asked to comment on an e-mail with some shocking photos now going round alleging a certain brand of popular jams and cordials once a household name, are being produced in very unhygienic conditions, the spokesman said it had been found to be false. “The CMC also received this particular e-mail and I immediately asked my officers to go and inspect the manufacturing plant in question. However they said the conditions under which the products were being produced was on par with our regulations. What have been used in the e-mail are some old photos and it is obvious that it is being sent by a mischief maker, as the company concerned has now cleaned up their act, we have no issues with it. In fact, we have been visiting the plant regularly for some time because it was earlier in an unhygienic state, and found that conditions are satisfactory now”, the health official said.
