Following a 20-km high-speed chase, in the early hours of Monday (7), Weligama OIC Melan Kumarasinghe took into custody a lorry transporting cattle.
The officer had forced the driver to stop the speeding truck by firing in to the air. Responding to a query by The Island, the police officer said that he was on his way back to base when he observed the truck speeding towards Weligama from the direction of Akuressa. The driver had stopped the vehicle and fled leaving seven cows. The police are conducting further investigations to track down the driver and his accomplices.
