TRC to bring a national broadband policy

By Arthur Wamanan

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is to come up with a National Broadband Policy for internet providers to lift their standards.

Consultant, Broadband initiatives of the TRCSL, Sanath Siriwardena told The Nation the policy was drafting and would be introduced soon.

The TRCSL on Friday launched the country’s first speed testing facility through which the people could monitor the downloading speed. “It will function similar to a weighing scale. The subscribers will be able to monitor the actual downloading speed at a given time and place,” he said.

He also said the proposed policy would specify certain standards the providers would have to adhere. “There should be a minimum level of speed limit. If the subscriber finds out the actual level is lower than the standard minimum speed, he could complain to the TRCSL or the internet provider,” he said.

He said the commission had urged the internet providers to improve the service to the people with improved internet speed. Internet users have the access for the service through the TRC website; www.trcgov.lk and click on the option ‘Broadband Speed Test’ on top of the webpage. The user then should choose a domain (USA or Europe) and choose a speed from the given options.

Secretary to the President and Chairman of TRCSL, Lalith Weeratunge the chief guest at the launch of the speed testing facility, said the commission together with the providers should have worked to expand the internet services to all parts of the country for the benefit of the children.
