Trishaw drivers want Regulatory Commission

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Three wheeler drivers and owners want an authority to regulate their operations.

President of the all island Three Wheeler Drivers and Owners Association, G. Sudil Jayaruk, on Thursday urged the government to set up a commission for that purpose.

In a letter to Transport Minister Kumara Welgama on July 20, he stated the problems faced by the industry. In response, a few days later, the Minister sent a letter to him saying that the three wheel industry was not under his purview and the matter should be taken up with Minister C. B. Ratnayaka. But, a few days ago he told the media that all three wheelers would have to install meters. Jayaruk said that the three wheel industry was rendering a valuable service to the public, but the image of the industry had been tarnished by some critics. It had taken several months to select the right Minister for the industry, he said. When the representatives of his association met Minister Welgama, he used to say that it was Minister C.B. Ratnayaka who was responsible for the industry. When members called on Minister Ratnayaka, he told them to see Minister Welgama. Now the matter had sorted out, he said pointing out that the association had held several discussions with Minister Ratnayaka in charge of the Private Bus and Three Wheel industry. Minister Ratnayaka was convinced that a regulatory commission would be necessary to maintain standards of the trishaw service.

Jayaruk added that Minister Ratnayaka had also agreed to draft a National Three Wheel Transport Policy, because three wheelers had become an integral part of the public transport system.
