Ridma Dissanayake

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has called for a list of abandoned lands and premises within the Colombo district following a Medical Research Institute finding that they have become active breeding grounds of the dengue mosquito, a ministry spokesman said.

He said Minister Sirisena has instructed health authorities to make a list of such abandoned places.

"The authorities are preparing a list of abandoned houses and lands in the Colombo district with the assistance of the Environmental Police Unit of the Police Department," the spokesman said.

There are a large number of abandoned premises in Colombo. These are used to dump garbage thus increasing dengue.

According to a ministry research, dengue mosquitoes' density has increased seven fold and locating owners of these abandoned premises has become vital.

The Environmental Police Unit have received details regarding 160 such abandoned places, he said.
