Billion rupee increase in gem exports in March

The Manager Exports (Gems) of the Gem and Jewellry Authority Rohan Pitigala yesterday said that 2012 would be a successful year for the gem export Industry as export earnings in March had shown a billion rupee increase over the preceding month.

In the value addition sector too the export earnings in March had exceeded by two million rupees, the exports of February.

He said that Director General of the Gem and Jewellry Authority Nimal Bandara had also been able to increase the revenue to the state by hundreds of millions of rupees through the discovery of gem bearing land at Thammanna in Kataragama, the area surrounding the Kalupalama in Kalawana and the land occupied by the Army detachment at Kuruwita.

He said that in February this year gems to the value of Rs. 1,480,768,795 had been exported and in March the gem export figure had doubled to Rs. 2,405,867,674.

And by the way of value addition gemstones that had been imported from Madagascar, Brazil and Thailand by cutting for export earned Rs. 4,878,675 in February and in March earned a record income of Rs. 6,321,344.
