The prices of certain essential food items at Lak Sathosa have increased during the last two weeks, while only white sugar and red raw samba prices have come down.
Big onions have gone up to Rs. 69.50 a kilo from Rs. 66, Potatoes to Rs. 76 from Rs. 72, Dry Sprats Rs. 425 from Rs. 399, Canned fish(425 grmmes) Rs. 165 from Rs. 162, and Brown Sugar Rs. 103 from Rs. 102.
The items that have come down in price are White Sugar Rs. 93.50 from Rs. 94.50 and Red Raw Samba Rs. 66 from Rs. 68.
The prices of other essentials remain the same. They are Red Lentils (Rs. 124), Maldive Fish (Rs. 2,200) canned fish 155 gram (Rs. 74) and Wheat Flour Rs. 80.50
The prices of nine varieties of rice too remain the same with Samba at Rs. 64, Keeri Samba Rs. 82, Red Raw Rs. 45, White Raw Rs. 45.50 Nadu Rs. 52.50, Red Nadu Rs. 51, White Raw Samba Rs. 62, Basmathi (normal) Rs. 108 and Basmathi (special) Rs. 108.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade said that the prices at Sathosa are much cheaper than in the open market and goods were available in plenty. He said there would be no price increases or shortages for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year next week.
He said that Minister Johnston Fernando had directed the Chairman or the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Rumy Marzook to raid and prosecute traders and trading establishments who were violating the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).
