අකුණු අනතුරු ඇතිවිය හැකි බැවින් එළිමහන් ස්‌ථානවල අවුරුදු උත්සව පැවැත්වීමේදී දැඩි විමසිල්ලෙන් ක්‍රියා කරන ලෙස කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව මහජනතාවට අවධාරණය කරයි.
අන්තර් මෝසම් කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය යටතේ දිවයිනේ ඕනෑම ප්‍රදේශයක අකුණු අනතුරු ඇතිවිය හැකි බව කාලගුණ විද්‍යාඥ අනුෂා වර්ණසූරිය මහත්මිය "දිවයින"ට පැවසුවාය.
විශේෂයෙන්ම බස්‌නාහිර, දකුණ, වයඹ, සබරගමුව, මධ්‍යම පළාත්වලට සවස්‌ කාලයේද, සෙසු පළාත්වලට උදේ කාලයේ ද ගිගුරුම් සහිත වැසි ඇතිවිය හැකි බව ඒ මහත්මිය කීවාය.
අහස වලාකුළින් බරව පවතින අවස්‌ථාවලදී, වැසි පවතින අවස්‌ථාවලදී අකුණු අනතුරු ඇතිවීමට හැකියාව ඇතැයි වර්ණසූරිය මහත්මිය සඳහන් කළාය.
එවැනි අවස්‌ථාවල එළිමහන් පිට්‌ටනිවල ගැවසීම ඉතාමත්ම අනතුරුදායක බැවින් අවුරුදු උත්සව සංවිධායකයන් කාලගුණ තත්ත්වයන් පිළිබඳ සැලකිලිමත්වීම අත්‍යාවශ්‍ය බව ඒ මහත්මිය අවධාරණය කළාය.
දේශගුණික විපර්යාස හේතුවෙන් අතීතයට සාපේක්‍ෂව අකුණුවල තීව්‍රතාවය ද වැඩි වී ඇතැයි පැවසූ ඒ මහත්මිය ගිගුරුම් සහිත වැසි හෝ වැසි රහිතව අහස ගිගුරුම් සහිත වන අවස්‌ථාවලදී විද්යුත් උපකරණ මුළුමනින්ම විසන්ධි කොට තබන ලෙස ද ඉල්ලීමක්‌ කළාය.

Met Department warning: Beware of Bak Maha Akunu

The Meteorology Department yesterday requested the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning, popularly known as Bak Maha Akunu, which is peculiar to the month of April with the approach of convectoral showers.
It forecasts that showers or thundershowers would develop over most parts of the island during the afternoon and evening today. It also stated that there might be temporary localized fairly strong winds during thundershowers. During the inter-monsoonal period high daytime temperature leads to air particles closer to ground to rise.
At higher atmosphere, generally around 10-12 kilometres from the ground, the air particles will turn into packets filled with moisture and form clouds due to cooling effects.
Out of these clouds some become unstable and this is the cause for thunderstorms, a spokesman for the department explained. The department also said that the Sun would be directly overhead on Sri Lanka from April 5 to 14 adding that the nearest towns over which the Sun was overhead yesterday about 12.12 noon, were Maradankadawala, Oddu madu and Maha Illuppallama.

Two youths died of electrocution and another was injured and admitted to the Galgamuwa hospital after being struck by lightning as they were taking cover under a huge tree on the banks of a tank in Ethimale in Galgamuwa during a heavy thunder shower around 6.45 pm on Monday. The youths had been on their way back home after play when tragedy struck them.
The deceased were identified as J. A Asanka Sandaruwan Gunatilleke(18) and R. M. Sanath Kumara of Guruwawatta, Ehetuwewa.

Ignore lightning at your peril

The death toll due to lightning strikes is on the rise day by day with the start of the monsoon season. Though the Met. department has issued warnings to the public to be vigilant and to take precautionary actions to avoid such calamities, it seems all that is in vain.
The latest consequences of ignoring such advice came in a flash killing two young men while they were playing on Tuesday at Guruwatta in Gallewa in the Galgamuwa area.
Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said that two young men and another who were playing cricket on Tuesday evening around 6.45 p.m. died following a lightning strike and one of the friends who was injured was admitted to Galgamuwa Hospital.
The deceased were identified as J. A. Asanka Sandaruwan (18) and R. M. Sanath Kumara.
The bodies were kept for post mortem at the Galgamuwa Hospital yesterday.
