Now, govt. mulls making containers mandatory for eggs

By Lal Gunasekera

Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando is studying a proposal that the poultry farmers be required to transport and store eggs in containers to prevent damage estimated to be 8-10 per cent.

A ministry sources told The Island that Minister Fernando had given serious thought to the proposal.

A new law making it mandatory for vegetables and fruits to be packed and transported in plastic crates in January 2011 ran into stiff resistance from farmers and the government amended the law to limit the use of the containers to the transportation and storage of a few varieties of vegetables.
