Disna Mudalige

The Power and Energy Ministry has commenced a programme to grant CFL bulbs free of charge to places of religious worship throughout the country in the drive to conserve energy.

The programme commenced on Friday with the distribution of CFL bulbs to Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya and Sri Wajiragnana Dharmayathanaya, Maharagama by Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Minister Ranawaka said the contribution of all is necessary to achieve the goal to supply electricity to all by the end of 2012.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has to bear a heavy cost for electricity generation since about 84 percent of the country's electricity generation depends on fuel, the minister said.

He said the country could face the future with more confidence if the electricity generated spending a high cost was used sparingly.

Ranawaka said schoolchildren and state and private institutions have supported the energy conservation programme and with the the distribution of CFL bulbs to places of religious worship, the contribution of religious groups is also sought for this endeavour.

Gangarama Viharadhipathi Ven Galaboda Gnanissara thera, Bellanvilla Raja Maha Viharadhipathi Ven Wimalarathana thera and Mahaoya Anuruddha thera of Maharagama Sri Wajiragnana Dharmayathanaya accepted the CFL bulbs.
