The Colombo Municipal Council ( CMC) will shortly begin night raids on all supermarkets and take away restaurants in the city to check their fresh food products. “This is because we have found many food items such as fish, chicken, beef, pork, sausages stored in their deep freezers are spoilt by night because they have been kept at zero temperatures. We have also found a number food outlets also sell foods they have made during the daytime at night. Food poisoning resulting from eating spoilt or contaminated food is on the rise and we need the co-operation of all food market owners to help us arrest this trend”, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, Chief Medical Officer , CMC told The Nation.
He said they were awaiting the arrival of temperature thermometers to carry out these raids. “These special thermometers are used in most countries to check whether fresh meat and fish products are frozen at the correct temperatures. We have already placed orders for a few of them. The moment they arrive we shall start our night inspections “, he said. Those outlets that are found to be selling spoilt foods at night will be taken to courts”, he warned.
