Yoghurt products to be inspected next week

By Carol Aloysius

All yoghurt products sold within the Colombo City limits would be tested for bacteria by next week, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) sources told The Nation.

“Other than the Highland products, we will be inspecting yoghurt products of all the other companies as we have had several reports that many of these products are not up to the required standard”, the sources said. The recent investigations had revealed a large variety and number of yoghurt products being sold without listing ingredients, the manufacturing date and the expiry date and the manufacturing locations.

“Many of them are either outdated or contain bacteria leading to health risks. Our food inspectors have found these sub standard products being sold at supermarkets, school canteens and takeaway outlets. We have decided to penalise and take the owners to court” sources said.

They said similar inspections had been carried out recently on all ice creams in the city. “Only one manufacturer sent us samples directly from their plant. Since the others have failed to send us samples up to now , we will wait for the results of our inspections, and thereafter take the offenders to courts under the Food Act.”, Dr P. Kariyawasam, Chief Medical Officer, CMC said.
