The Environmental Units are staffed 24 hours a day to handle public complaints related to environmental issues and provide a valuable service to speedily resolve such matters, according to Sri Lanka Police.
The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) recently conducted a two week workshop for 150 Officers-in-Charge of these special police units. The workshop covered legal issues pertaining to country’s environment, and was conducted for the officers in two groups at the auditorium of the CEA.
Officers were briefed on various aspects connected to the environment including the National Environmental Act, the Mines and Mineral Act, bio diversity, noise and air pollution, waste management, the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance, and the Urban Development Authority Act. The workshops were conducted by experts in the environmental field, while practical training sessions were also conducted.
Chairman of the CEA Charitha Herath said they conducted the workshop jointly with the Sri Lanka Police to assist officers to accurately identify the subject of environment and to effectively implement environmental laws. He added the CEA was committed to help the country reach future development goals while adopting an environmental friendly policy.
