The Norochcholai thermal power plant currently generates 300 MW of electricity to the National Grid, according to an answer tabled by Chief Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardene in Parliament yesterday.
The Thermal Power Plant was opened on March 22 this year.
Since then, the power plant had been operating as a base load plant, providing much needed electricity demand especially during the drought season in the months of August, September and October.
The plant had to shut down on a few occasions due to technical failures, which were promptly, attended to by contractor and CEB staff, the tabled answer said.
According to the tabled answer, the power plant had been closed down for 35 days due to scheduled and unscheduled maintenance work and coal supply delays.

Norochcholai closed for 35 days
The Norochcholai Thermal Power Plant had broken down and had been closed or inactive for 35 days intermittently since its launching up to yesterday, Parliament was told.
A document tabled by Deputy Power and Energy Minister Premalal Jayasekera, in response to a question raised by DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, said that the power plant had been shut down for 35 days due to the delays in the supply of coal and planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
The plant had also been inactive for some days owing to technical faults and the contractor and the CEB staff had worked to remedy those situations by repairing the plant, the document added. (SI)
